Couldn't figure a way to fit these in the OP but here are the results of the poll from last thread.

The region will now be known as the "Folmskar Region" in light of its victory in the region name poll; future threads will reflect this.

Additionally, the regional pokedex will have a mix of both fakemon and original pokemon, which won by a large margin. It's already been mentioned in the OP but anons are free to submit fakemon designs now.

as for the disparity between the number of responses in question 1/question 2, the questions weren't mandatory so 1 respondent only replied to the second question inb4 rigged polls

Alright, so new addition to the project: a "Character Bank" sourced from /vp/. Basically this is a chance for anons to create either minor characters or named npcs. This gives us a chance to get a lot of potentially different characters and make them work together in a fun way,

Minor characters constitute smaller, relatively non-important side characters that have a unique appearance but don't play a major role in the main plot (ex: Kurt the Apricorn Maker, the Karate King from Saffron, Gabby & Ty). Submissions for these will be archived and voted in at a later date.

As for NPCs, the vast majority of these concepts will be accepted unless there's substantial opposition. To make the world more interesting, these NPCs can be participants in sidequests or even have minor character arcs (such as an NPC having a crush on the local nurse joy, or an NPC telling the player about their dream to be a Pokemon Trainer, only for them to eventually become one after time has passed).

I think it would be based to theme the box legendary powers off the emotions of rage, fear, and love (in which love is used by its respective legendary as a form of allegiance). Here are some rough doodles I made of them.

If you want to base the setting on Scandinavia then I think it would be better to base the legendaries around concepts such as honesty, honor, pragmatism, et.c.

Honesty
In ancient Nordic society your word was bond. If you had given your word then you keep it no matter how stupid or inconvenient it might be. Even if the situation changes later on.

Honor
It was important to protect your own and your family's honor. If someone besmirched your honor then it could be ground to legally kill them (they could still defend themselves).

Pragmatism
Vikings knew that fate was unavoidable, it might be possible to delay ones fate but in the end it would always catch up in one way or another. And even if the end is inevitable how you get there is still important.

Just a reminder the starters don't have to be based on irl fauna of the region. They can fit the environment, but regions have never been limited buy their irl counterparts.

I’m fond of the idea of them not being involved in the story. Like another anon pointed out, it has become pretty cliche. I’m a fan of how gen 1 and 2 did it with them being out there to discover. A reward for exploration. Plus you can add hints and lore of them through out the game world, ala pokemon mansion for new and mewtwo.

>Story
Like with legendaries I’m a fan of how the first 2 gems did it with the smaller scale and limited plot. More of a focus on the feeling of being on an adventure. Like maybe more focus on scenarios like when going to cianwood for the medicine. More scenarios like that then a reliance on an evil team. There could even be multiple sort of teams for different areas of the region.

Alright anons, I'm apparently a huge idiot and there were some issues with the poll for the region name. Essentially one of the respondents forgot to vote as I didn't make the first question required, which could have changed the outcome, in addition to there being a lot of new responses after the results had been posted which actually did change the outcome, because I had forgotten to close the poll. Finally, some scandinavian anons brought up the concern that "Folmskar" is not pronounced phonetically in english the same way it is in nordic languages (it's apparently pronounced something like "Foam-chair"), which could hurt both parity between languages and authenticity to some degree.

In conclusion and after some deliberation we've decided to do a "final round" that takes the 4 highest scoring region names from the previous poll and fixes all of the aforementioned issues with the previous poll. Apologies for the error.

The poll's deadline is at 12:00 AM EST

quick progress update concerning the graphics of the game, sprited a house tile and did a quick tile test that's still heavily WIP for now. something i've been working on is to get a sort of "cloudy texture" for the water similar to what BW2 has although it's been difficult so far. on the left is how it currently looks in rpg maker while the right is a mockup done in photoshop which i'm trying to find a way to make work in the engine itself. the width limits of the tileset in addition to a bunch of other stuff is proving difficult though so if anyone has ideas or feedback on how I could get this to work, it would be hugely beneficial

I haven't used rpg maker in the last 8 years, but I've done a bit of graphics/gamedev work, what's the issue exactly? Is the resolution of the cloud texture too big to fit it in your texture atlas?
If memory is a bottleneck, I might be tempted to generate the cloud texture procedurally with Perlin or Simplex noise, but there is surely a way to use a higher res texture.

the issue is mainly that the clouds have been created manually with brushes because there really isn't a texture i've found that can be used. any texture/pattern would have to be able to loop seamlessly as that's how the tiles are mapped with in rmxp and there (understandably) really aren't any that are able to.i know rmxp allows for overlays/fogs but sadly i think they only work for an entire map rather than being able to be applied to a single tile. the solution i'm working on right now is just to make a bunch of tiny individual "clouds" that can be put on a layer above the water tile manually.

It houses some of it's most prolific history and has ruled the entirity of Scandinavia on several occasions.

I was thinking cause boats are highly influential in scandinavian history (especially vikings) you could have it still bearing the grass type but maybe add steel or just leave it as it is.

PLEASE make it full of white people! A cute blonde main rival girl wearing a Faroese shawl, and another one introduced later inspired by Sami! There could be a lichen forest near a village in the north, and a boat museum/harbor with viking influences in the south. And give a cute towheaded look to the boy playable character! Faroe Islands could be a super comfy starting town, and Copenhagen could act as a Lumiose of sorts, getting there by boat first, and unlocking more boat rides or bridges for story progression. There could be a legendary associated with summer and a maypole festival to summon it, with ribbons that unfurl as it streaks through the forest. Actually, make it somewhat common to give some cultural connections. People could harvest its ribbons FOR the maypole! Oh and there HAVE to be a bunch of tall forests and frozen lakes, preferably with warm log cabins!

This is pretty neat anon, I appreciate the help. Pic-related is how it looks in game at full opacity. I think the pattern might be a little too busy currently to use at full opacity since it can be a bit overbearing, assuming this is how it's intended to look (I had to resize to 64x64 as RMXP's tile dimensions are multiples of 16, so maybe that changed something if it looks off). If there's any way to make the clouds a little more sparse I think it could work though.

Yeah, >>43863269 was just done with a brush tool and then I took the images and put them on the tileset, mapping them on the 2nd layer (the water being the first layer).

I think the main difficulty with the clouds is that it's hard to actually have them appear "natural" in an overlapping texture (although you're right, it's tedious to get it to work manually). RPG Maker XP sadly isn't a very advanced engine so it's hard to really manipulate any textures to appear to flow naturally, as everything is just tiled out.

pic rel is what the new texture looks like at max opacity. i'll try to play around with it some more, i wouldn't sweat it if you aren't able to get it to work because it's admittedly an ambitious concept. the textures you've already given me are really nice and i'll probably be able to put them to use in some way

I think the whole region could have themes around hospitality, solidarity and cooperation.

Hospitality has been important since the vikings while solidarity and cooperation has become more important in recent years.

There were talks about a bridge between the counterpart of Denmark and Sweden. Denmark and Sweden has had a rivalry between each other for quite some time now to say the least.

Maybe there are two rival cities at either end of the bridge talking shit and in general poking fun at the other. It would be fun to visit either cities while the bridge is being built and hear how people in each city are suggesting how fortunate the other city is because their city is obviously better in some way. All this while still making it clear that everyone is pretty excited about the bridge and there is really no bad blood between any of them.

i absolutely agree with you that "tourism regions" are a problem and one of the goals for the project (at least from my pov) is to make something that's a bit more authentic and faithful to the source material than what game freak did with kalos and alola. obviously this isn't easy to do but it will and should be kept in mind, i agree it isn't in the game's best interest to have snow and ice and vikings everywhere.

that said, scandinavian culture and nordic mythology are both unique and interesting subjects and it's understandable that anons have a lot of ideas related to them. hopefully some kind of middle ground can be met as far as this goes and the region feels distinctly nordic while at the same time not feeling like a caricature of the actual location

Said this on the Sage Discord, But a Normal Type Gym Leader whose Gym is a repurposed Apartment basement where you do stuff for his friends in their hangout pad and battle before the dude arrives into the basement to battle you.

Before you take on the gym and later on, you can find him working at a store working as a vendor. No Library or school or artist or whatever Whitney is with Normal types... Just a normal dude who runs a normal job.

Results for the final region poll. By a large margin, the name "Forenti" won so our region will be known as the Forenti Region from now on.

Anyways, regarding what the future holds, we're hoping to begin more focused planning in terms of the plot and region. Likely what we'll do for the plot is take character submissions for the major characters/entities (Professor, Rival, Evil Team) and use that as a framework to build on, with the fine points being ironed out later. I'll probably open the submission period for the Regional Professor concepts tomorrow, so feel free to start brainstorming now. The submission period will last a couple of days after it starts, to give people time.

Still looks too human, also it's wearing human clothing now. Maybe replace a few of the clothing elements and make them more scaly/draconic (the jewel, the belt buckle, the dress) and make the hair long and messy, not prim and proper. The mouth should also be less UwU smile and more snakelike grin. Do like the lack of eyes though, that's definitely the way to go

Posting some additions to Folmskar Anon's dex draft after some discussion in the discord. This is all very rudimentary and feedback is appreciated. Gold squares are proposed regional evos (again nothing is set in stone, however).

One of the issues we've run into is the inclusion of regional forms from other regions. Galarian Meowth/Perrserker, which would be an ideal choice for the region due to them being based on vikings. Since Forenti has its own regional forms, there are concerns that having regional forms for other regions might be immersion-breaking for some. If anyone has an opinion, feel free to make your voice heard.

i don't think it /has/ to be an animal from the chinese zodiac. i'm aware of the pattern but it would just mean that our starter would be "obsolete" at some point when game freak does it. not only that but it really limits the potential for different submissions because there are only 4 animals to choose from

Not really a gameplay idea, but I'd like very much if, for once, you actually captured your own starter. Like, instead of just choosing out of 3 pokéballs, there was a Safari-like mechanic where you got to explore this Pokémon Sanctum (that you cannot explore later, this is supposed to be just for young trainers) and actually choose which pokémon you want (this way you don't have to reset to get a shiny or the nature you want). Plus, it adds a little bit to your relationship with your starter too, since you didn't win it as a gift, you earned its friendship.

Here's a mechanic I'd like to see introduced in a Pokémon game: npc's now have memory. That means your rival, gym leaders and even regular trainers on the routes now remember if they won a match against you. And while you can always have a rematch against regular trainers, your rival just kind of moves on after beating you. That creates a lot more of tension in the rival battles, specially since they will remember they won the next time they meet you.

Also: in 'official battles' (meaning battles with the Elite Four and the gym leaders) you can only use the same number of Pokémon (or less) as the person you're challenging. That means that if a Gym Leader uses 3 Pokémon, you have to choose, before the battle, which of your Pokémon will be battling. I don't know if that's a stretch in RPG Maker's possibilities, but I imagine this could allow a Gym leader to better counter your team by tailoring his Pokémon choices according to your own.
Example: if you're challenging a Water type gym and have an electric type on your team, Gym Leader might use Quagsire, but if you have a grass type, they might use Tentacruel etc.

Instead of making you choose before the battle, maybe the limit could be the amount of substitutions you make. Each new pokemon used could count as a new substitution while pokemon already used that you just swapped out could be used again without counting as a new substitution.

Ghost/Ice. Dark/Fighting is honestly a type matchup that doesn't make much sense, since Dark is already a "Fighting type", but mischievous. I think the Ghost type fits the undead theme better than dark, but I don't see a problem with it being Dark/Ice too.

Actually meant to address the rest of your half about the gym leaders but I got sidetracked and it slipped my mind. A mon limit for gym fights is definitely doable in RPG Maker and is something I think is worth considering. The gym leader basing his teams on your own sounds difficult to implement but maybe not impossible, there's also the fact that it'd be constrained by the dex to some degree, as there won't be infinite mons of a given type. There are other solutions as well, such as gym leaders (or at least elite four) having wild card mons like in the Pokemon Stadium games, to cover extra bases. The gym leader advice is a cute idea, I could fit it in before the leader dialogue after a certain amount of losses and have the leader hit you with a "Are you ready to start?" prompt after giving the advice.

I like were you are going for, but its not there yet for me. some suggestions i have are.

add the grimmsnarl line, that way you check the box for "troll and imp" pokemon. maybe make it a rival to hatterene line since there is no gardevoir line. just random though, no real reason for it.

add a deer pokemon, maybe use stanler or Sawsbuck and give it a regional evo, or just a new pokemon.

add the stountland line because of rescue and hunting dogs

also add either of the sheep pokemon, both are pretty based so i dont mind either

and i like the idea of using galarian meowth,i say alolan vulpix can also fit here because of the artic fox, outside of that, most regional variants are pretty stuck in their own region.

Thank you for the feedback, Grimmsnarl is something that has been discussed and there's a high probability of adding it due to us needing to get both our fairy type and later gen mon numbers up. Stantler is a very good choice and really a no brainer, Deerling will 100% be in provided we can successfully implement seasons. Stoutland would be another good choice although a St. Bernard dogmon has been pitched so there might be a bit of overlap with that. Adding the sheep would probably make sense too. All in all, very good suggestions, the feedback is appreciated.

So we've started to move things along plotwise and we're at the point where we'll starting to take submissions for major characters. The first character in question is the Regional Pokemon Professor.

Two opposing teams- one representing hope/optimism/whatever the fuck you can draw from it, and the other fear/hopelessness/whatever. Each trying to get one legendary of a trio that brings prosperity/calamity.. You progress through the game fighting the team(s) through caves, forests, industrial areas learning more clues on how to summon the legends which culminates in your typical lightshow final boss battle with the leader. Throughout the story through bits and pieces you find out the high command for both teams are working together to culminate the head of the legendary trio for their own nefarious goals.

To play into thematics, the team based on fear uses Dark/Ghost/Poison types (threat and dangers) and the team based on hope uses Psychic/Fighting/Fairy as the opposing force.

Atop of the broad scale of hope and fear, it could be a region that is faced with a future of disintegration due to some form of disaster, and each team is hunting their associated legend under the guise of their own solution to the impending doom. Team Fear is chasing the calamity legend to take control of the region and rule with an iron fist presented as a quick/easy solution to the problem at hand while Team Hope seeks to ease control over the region by using the prosperity legend to have the region willingly handed to them by the people by improving their conditions while simultaneously obtaining complete control. The reason the teams are working together is so when the legendaries are summoned they can "fight" and make it look like one team beat the other troublemaker and has become a hero for the region, giving legitimacy to their power.

Going to try my hand at a fakemon here, very rough, pls no bully since its first time.

Basically, it's a Rock/Poison squid whose head is formed by collecting rock and sediment on its head as it swims underground, and which secretes poison from a gland behind its eye (making it blind, forcing its parents to care for it) which leaks into its tentacles. The minerals from jewels and rare rocks studded into its cap are used to develop more poison glands in the final evo, creating more 'eyes', with the poison eventually being filtered enough throughout its body to where it can properly see and hunt.

The blacks in the drawing are poison. Not sure if I should continue any more work on it.

That's looks great. I would correlate the poison more with the beak. This is because all octopi and some squid have venom that they inject with their beaks.

That's true and I was thinking of that, but I was trying to think of a way to make the tentacles more interesting. I think I'll probably lessen the poison on the tentacles and make them more 'realistic' (suckers, actually use octopus tentacles for reference) and then prop up the beak more. Maybe keep some of the poison on the tentacles in the final evo just because I kinda like how it looks.

I thought about this too, but ultimately A. I don't know how many regional forms the creator wants and B. I think this mon is just too different from Tentacruel in a lot of ways to where I could justify that.

This is actually a really clever design progression. Definitely very rudimentary sketch, but I see what the idea is.
Maybe the eyes on the cap are a bit excessive, is the biggest criticism I think I have. Also, the beak should be more visible on the 1st stage.
