Gen 7's story is so obstructive it literally detracts from the actual Pokemon aspect (gyms I mean trials) of the game and makes them less memorable. It's dogshit.

Story in Pokemon was a mistake.
Funny thing is SM is so lazily designedthat if you took out all the unecessary interactions and dialogue it becomes really apparent how barren it is. Alola can't stand on its own two feet as a region so they push characters and plot in your face to make the experience seem fuller than it really is.
It's a complete antithesis to earlier gens where they actually focused on level design and added shit to explore so it ends up being an much more immersive experience despite not being plot focused.

SM had a *passable* story, something that ought to be the minimum bar for a plot-focused game
And I really don't know whether that's due to its merit, or because surrounding games were either blatantly unfinished (XY), unfinished with the addition of the most divisive villain in the series (ORAS), a rehash but objectively worse (USUM) or just meh (SWSH)

2 hours. The first hour of the game made me think it was going to be just as bad, since you fight Hop like 4 times and he keeps throwing wordswordswords at you, then you are put in the Wild Area, which was incredibly liberating when compared to my grievances with Moon.

I guarantee the showdown at N's castle or in the Giant Chasm would also take ages in later gens

This. Plot dumps were easy to ignore in the 2D games because you could just mash through it. But with the 3D games, you have to wait for MUH CINEMATIC CAMERA bullshit that makes every scene take 3 times as long to get through.

Whatever opinion you may have of BW or SM, having some story is still better than none. I would argue that even the first two gens DO have a story to an extent, considering your interations with your rival and Team Rocket.

That's Pokemon in general, tho. Pokemon has always been a mediocre JRPG series that refuses to change up the archaic formula, throws away beloved content and performs just enough to be acceptable.
