So I played through Gen 6 last year and I found it greatly lacking in difficulty due to me being 20 levels above everything in the late game, which I later found out was caused by the Exp. Share. I would like to replay X and OR without it, do you have experience (lol) with such playthrough? Is it still ridiculously easy or is it actually balanced?

I had a rotation going with Chesnaught, Wormadame Sandy, Lunatone, ZardY, Medicham, Illumise, Machoke and Staraptor (so about a 50/50 split with shitmons and good ones) Exp Share off all the way through, still relatively easy because I maxed out everybody in super training.
Just don't do that and it would be a good challenge I reckon.

Because they're now targeted at very young children and Game Freak believes that these children have 0 attention span. As such, the games are designed to be essentially obstacle-free so that even little kids can progress with ease. If you make it challenging then (Game Freak believes) they will just give up on the game and pick up an iPad or something similar.

I Nuzlocked Y last year. It's not just the Exp. Share. Gen 6 seems to have increased the shared experience rate in general, and they ditched the experience scaling of Gen 5. Even switch training causes mons to level up much, much faster than previous gens, and it's a lot easier to overlevel.

That being said, XY has some surprisingly challenging random trainer battles. The early game Furfrou double battle is particularly notorious but even late game, anything with a Fighting, Flying or Fairy STAB can be pretty dangerous.

SM or USUM are legitimately decently challenging and balanced games if you turn off the Exp Share and don't grind though.

- Turn off EXP Share
- Set the game to Set mode in the option menu
- Don't use Super Training
- Don't use Amie
- Don't use Legendaries
- Restrict yourself to only using mons from a specific geneneration (For example only using Gen 1 mons or only using Gen 6 mons)

It's pretty disappointing that nowadays you have to set yourself a load of extra rules for Pokémon games not to feel embarrassingly easy. It used to be a way to challenge yourself after you'd already completed the game (the original Nuzlocke comics are literally called Pokémon: Hard-Mode), but doing even a first playthrough without them is too easy in recent gens.

Gen 6's exp share is piss easy, going the old fashioned way is also easy. Gen 7 tries to balance it but it's still easy

Your best bet is to get a romhack that makes it challenging even with a EXP'Share. If you want to play Y/X or M/S/US/UM, just get yourself shitmons like Delibird, Cherrim and anything that can get beaten to a pulp

Those rules are just "Play it like the older games played". It end up playing the same as you would play in say early gens.
I personally don't like Nuzlockes because it's not just "Pokemon but harder" but "Pokemon with different rules".

Gen 6 is easy because every trainer uses 3 pokemon max (even Gyms/Rival) and their teams are ass. NOT because EXP share cuts out the 500 hours of running in circles in grass the previous games required.
If you want to play through without overlevelling just rotate your team members. I had about 20 active members on my first playthrough and they were all around 5-10 levels behind what the game was throwing at us.

Boss battles are generally easy; even if you refuse every crutch the game throws at you.

But there are some random trainers; mostly Battle Girls/Black Belts; who can actually pose a challenge. Like there's a Battle Girl in Reflection Cave with a Hawlucha with a movepool about 500 times better than Korrina's with Rock/Fighting/Flying coverage.

You'll start to get "underlevelled" towards the end of the game but, just like every other Pokemon game, it's still easily beatable without grinding since the AI generally has weak movesets and they never switch out Pokemon. As long as you know your type match-ups and have a reasonably balanced team then you're fine. You may find one or two Pokemon that give you a hard time but you can usually beat them with X items or stat-boosting moves.
