Shift is default. It asks you if you want to change your Pokémon every time you make the trainer's Pokémon faint and they're about to send a new one.
It doesn't ask you if you want to switch if they withdraw their non fainted Pokémon though

Set always. It doesn't change that much but it makes the games for fair, switching should actually cost something. I only played switch as a kid when I didn't know what it did. If you've never played set I encourage it, it's not huge but it makes a reasonable difference

Switch is what gives you the option to switch to a pokemon to counter the CPU's when one of theirs faints, makes the games even easier. Set is what pokemon battles are supposed to be like, they just send their next one out.

Shift, because in my autism I like to rotate team members (strictly following their capture order) and have my pokemon beat one of the other trainer's, then calling it back and sending the next in line for the following one - regardless of the type. Only exception is gym leaders/elite 4/rival battles when I always use my starter against their aces.
I use set for nuzlockes tho.

I usually switch to set since it ends up being less dialogue and smoother gameplay. The only real benefit of shift is being able to switch back into a weak Pokemon so you can switch back out and level it up, but the exp share accomplishes that instead.

Isn't it pointless to keep Set on if you're going to switch to a Pokemon that can counter the AI's pokemon as soon as they're sent out

Playing in shift is basically playing in baby easy mode, where you are able to make 2 turns when AI cant switch.

Also it basically kill the point of defensive pokémon since you can perma switch on attackers with advantage

I used to always play on Set because I thought the game asking me to change Pokemon constantly was annoying.
Now I continue to play on Set because Shift makes the game even more trivial.

Play it in shift until the end. It's easy at the begining but then when the enemy trainer have a full team it turns kinda unfair.

I've played on Set for years. I only ask because I see myself switching my weakest mon to something else that can counter it anyway, which kind of eliminates as much challenge as Shift

With switch, you can get the jump on whatever pokemon the AI is sending out. With Set, you can switch to a counter, but it at least comes at the cost of eating whatever move the enemy sends at you. This is the way Pokemon was always meant to be played, as shown in all forms of Pokemon media, and the way it's played in PvP for a reason.
