The one right before this one where Ash challenged Bianca's dad to a battle and said he would retire if he lost, gets his ass kicked and only got lucky because her dad took pity on him and was moved by something Bianca said.

That's embarassing tho, good think I outgrew the anime just in time for dumbass Best Wishes and never watched a single episode.
Ash was always a moron but the thing I remember most was when he made Pikachu use quick attack against Agatha's Gengar... and that was in the Ruby/Sapphire anime.

Pikachu losing to fresh-out-of-the-professor's-lab chikorita is what made me drop the anime back as early as johto. I watched a COUPLE of johto episodes after that, but it left such a bad taste in my mouth it took like a decade for me to ever give a shit again.

how did this play in the anime itself? based on the screencaps, this feels like a fun continuation of kanto ash's clueless overconfidence. not bothering to bring anything other than palpitoad sells it for me

im sure for dedicated anime watchers the suspension of disbelief that he hasnt learned anything during johto, hoenn, and sinnoh would be frustrating, but this seems geared for casual viewers
