I liked it, but it ran its course.
Didn't like how some pokemon were still underwhelming even with a mega, but that's probably more on the strongest megas power creeping everything, including the weaker megas, to oblivion, as well as taking up the one mega slot per team.
Also, adding Fairy/Dragon and Tough Claws/Sand Force/Magic Bounce/-ate to everything was already getting old by ORAS.

Mega evolution was a fantastic idea executed as poorly as possible. It was a great way to buff mediocre and forgettable Pokemon and some of the mega evolutions like Mega Heracross were really cool sidegrades that worked completely differently from their base form. Naturally, shit freak ruined the mechanic in its debut generation by saturating the roster with insanely overpowered bullshit stapled onto shillmons and Pokémon that were already excellent. In hindsight, most Pokémon did not need a mega, and most megas should have been normal crossfire evos.

I appreciate that there is at least some uniformity in their design concepts (many of them are about exaggerating a specific feature of a Pokemon) but overall they're just as bad as Megas conceptually on top of being ugly and boring (they're exactly the same as Dynamax except with 1 of their STABs having a different effect) AND worst of all a lot of Gen 8 Pokemon feel incomplete because they were likely designed with their Gigantamax in mind (Cinderace, Sandaconda, and Duraludon in particular).

I only liked the ones that buffed Pokemon that both needed a power boost and had at least a half-decent design.
Giving them to pseudos, legendaries, mythicals, and other Pokemon that didn't need a boost was such a fucking waste.
As a concept, Megas could've been nice but they fucked the idea sideways.

The fact you can only have one on your team means they’re all competing for the slot, so invariably you’re going to pick something unga bunga like Lucario or Salamence over something more niche like Ampharos or Heracross. And don’t get me started on Absol, who is outclassed as an offensive magic bounce Pokémon by Sableye and Diancie. Megas were redundant.
