if you didn't shit on Venusaur and Gen2 starters designs we wouldn't have each game with furbaits, waifubaits and deviantart OCs as starters instead of big monsters

People like Venusaur it just wasn’t as popular because the other 2 were marketed more, and of the Bulbasaur line people loved Bulbasaur because of the anime and as a result had minimal exposure to his evolutions by comparison. The ONLY thing I can remember people disliking about Venusaur back in the day was its bloodshot eyes using certain attacks in Stadium. That shit looked disgusting.

Everybody I knew loved the GSC starters. Hell we were hyped about them back when we just knew them as Hinorashi, Waninoko, and... Chikorita.

Everyone loved Typhlosion and Feraligatr though, chicorita was disliked for being feminine in a time where games were mostly played by boys and then they gave her to ash

people shat on the Gen V starters which started the general trend of "professionmons" - especially Emboar, the most anthropomorphic of the trio
GameFreak then immediately came out with the Gen 6 starters which not only continued the profession trend but went far more anthropomorphic when Gen 5's most popular Pokemon is literally a chandelier and the most popular starter is a snake
GameFreak doesn't care about the fans, they do what they want to

Greninja is also the most popular starter ever made, so it would be dumb to say anthropomorphic/profession starters can't work. Just like Charizard was popular and Venusaur wasn't.

Chesnaught was the one getting Ignored for the most part, not even Chespin’s cuteness was enough to save the line. And even when people didn’t like Delphox, the line still had Fennekin and Braixen to fall back on.

They and the gen 4 starters (exclusively due to Torterra) are my favorite starter sets. Gen 2's starters all are decent and inoffensive designs, which can't be said for any other gen except possibly 1.

So? That's an accurate representation of most of the Pokemon fanbase. The list is pretty accurate and in tune with modern tastes regardless. Even Greninja took the first spot like he's always done, so it's not like anything has changed

I'm not trying to claim they are "good" but rather that I think they're "good". Let me have my opinions.
I use "inoffensive" to say that they aren't some ridiculous gimmick or whatever. Burning badger, alligator and plant brontosaurus are three simple and appealing concepts that don't force anything like a wrestling tiger or a spy lizard lanklet onto me. They're executed well - for Pokémon designs - and allow for easy immersion and imagination, which is just what I'm looking for.

I don't understand why this is a good quality to have. To me it reads as a design playing it too safe and rendering itself unmemorable. Part of GameFreak's design philosophy, which is a big reason Pokemon is as successful as it is, is to make sure a design is memorable by giving it "imperfections". I can agree with >>43874231
in that generally, Gen 2's starters are very forgettable and even though there are other generations that I think have worse trios (8 in particular), Gen 2's starters will always be the ones I think about the least.

I want to play Pokémon to spend a comfy time, to escape from the daily stress that is multiplied by my high functioning autism and anxiety. Simple, unremarkable while still appealing monster designs just help with that, that's my whole position. They don't stick out and don't demand anything from me that I'm not willing to give myself (aside from Typhlosion maybe but it's my least favorite of the three anyway so I never use it).
That's why Torterra is my favorite starter of all time, because to me it embodies this escapist desire.
