I heard there's a fair amount of side missions sprinkled around but then I remembered that this is pokemon, so the side mission are going to be fetch quests and grindy findies. Fuck man, it hurts. At least it seems like the whole isle is explorable immediately

That's only in hindsight. Outside of Yellow, which was more of an anime tie-in than definitive version, Crystal was the first one and did do a lot of new things (Though, a lot of it also didn't make it to the West, sadly)

Comparing it to Emerald and Platinum isn't entirely fair, since it was the first of it's kind, but that also doesn't excuse that it wasn't used to it's fullest potential either. We just didn't know any better back then because it was all we had. Now we have more, so it seems even lesser by comparison.
