If you took the leader, the troopers run about aimlessly in a panic and can no longer function as a group
If you took a trooper, they'd still function as a group but be less efficient until they can refill their ranks

Just my headcannon, but I think it would go into a coma from being away from the rest of its "body" and eventually wither and die. The old group would then mate with each other to make a baby and replace it.
