Because despite having the most seamless online and snappy gameplay of the 3D era the plot is a contrived and unexplained mess due to GameFreak's clusterfuck development cycle and all of the buildup for a grand adventure in the beginning of the game is quickly vanquished after Shalour city for KANTOOOO pandering and a glorified boss rush of the gym leaders.
AZOTH kingdom explanation never. 2015 Z expansion never. Redemption in Sword and Shield through Eternatus being the radiation of the weapon never.

The plot is just a watered down version of the gen 3/4 plot, the characters were bland and forgettable, the gym leaders and pokemon league were easy, there were very few optional locations, and the villains felt jokey despite having one of the most evil plots in in the series.
However, these games definitely had the best online hub in the series.

I liked the region, but a lot of wasted potential and the story was lame and dull and the game was piss easy even with xp share off
if we had a pokemon Z, with a slightly harder game, a few extra areas in all those teased places we never got to go and a real endgame that isn't one quest and one building and Kalos would be remembered as a great region

Realistically they're only slightly worse than B/W having better atmosphere and a sense of exploration and wonder towards the world but having weaker level design, an inferior story, and being too easy again

Good region, good Pokemon, good online. The story, gameplay, characters, and everything else sucked ass. Honestly that'd all be fine if it got a third version like DP did, fixing the problems and letting the good parts shine through, but that never happened so....

They were fun to play the first time because of all the hype. No reason to replay them when ORAS is the superior Gen 6 game and Gen 3-5 are better games in general.

Sticking to 2d would have been the ideal outcome but 2d pokemon on the 3ds would have sounded awkward. Ironically enough Z version would've made sense to release for a Z-axis referencing the step to 3d but apparently zygarde is a pitiful creature undeserving of closure

XY marked the start of an era where the discrepancy between the QoL improvements and everything else (plot, characters, handholding, lack of content, stupid minigames) became so egregious that it convinced a lot of people to find a new JRPG to latch onto and left the remaining fanbase in a constant state of anger and disbelief. Beneath the ever growing pile of zoomer-pandering bullshit, they're still fully functional Pokemon games that can be played like the old ones, which is why some people defend them. But at some point you have to wonder whether a series that is designed speficially against your interests really deserves your support.

Yeah, I think XY was actually a great step in moving forward. Not an amazing game on its own but it was progress. Ultimately it just got shafted when they canceled Z, if they had been able to flesh it out it would have probably ended up being a great game on top of all the innovation.

While platinum is far from my favorite game, the story and characters were definitely better, even if only marginally. Every gym leader has at least one appearance outside their gym, unlike xy where only korrina and wulfric did shit outside their gym. Cyrus actually had to strategically plan his capture of the main legends rather than lysandre so just ends up finding the xerneas/yveltal cocoon. The champion (as much as I dislike cynthia's character) actually has some relevance in the story. You had one competitive rival instead of four watered down ones. There were five trainers you could temporarily partner with that you end up battling in the postgame. There was an entire postgame island with a mini campaign and battle frontier rather than a small town, looker episode, and battle tower reskin. The gym leaders and elite four all had more pokemon and were tougher. There were more exploration options.

No story event for Zygarde, or Floette. I guess the online was the postgame and while gen6 online and pss was good gamefreak felt less of a need to add more content to the game and that’s why Kalos feels so baren and unfinished and this also applies to every game that came after it.

True, and so did RBY, but RS was also released over a decade before XY. In terms of the time period and console power, XY's postgame is far more inexcusable, especially when the slew of games before it (emerald, FRLG, DPPt, HGSS, BW, and BW2) all had better postgames.

Not really. XY has a far, far, far better battle facility and online multiplayer on top of that. It sounds like you're just looking for an excuse to mindlessly hate XY while ignoring RS being a shit game.

For the record I hate RS, hoenn is a bottom three region for me. I just think for the time period XY's postgame is worse. Online multiplayer and an improved battle tower is the MINIMUM expectation.

XY online is the best online of any Pokemon game, doesn't matter now since it's gone though. Still, those first 3 months without Poke Bank were so based, wonder trading starters and spending 50+ hours catching every pokemon before the second gym.
XY are a bad replay because of terrible pacing after Gym 2 and soulless region/characters and bad gyms. But it had some moments where it really shined, and I wish it were given a "Z" version to expand on it's ideas.

There are very brief, fleeting positives about S/M and SwSh but there is literally nothing good about X and Y. There is not one moment it feels and plays like a good pokemon game.

DP had an entire island, 4 legendary hunts, 3 mythical event ENCOUNTERS, and competitive online for the first time ever. BW had three new cities, 2 legendary hunts, one mythical event encounter, a looker sidequest that ties up loose ends in the story, and competitive online. XY has a beefed up battle tower, a new town where you can catch hidden ability pokemon, 3 legendaries, and a looker sidequest that doesn't explain much.
I'll take the DP/BW postgame over XY any day of the week.

Its Online mode in the first year before Bank releases was simply the best Pokemon could ever be. That was its best point.

In other view, in comparison to other games, XY always felt like it was incomplete. The game itself was pretty empty and lack anything great to be done after completing the main story. The evil team seem to be as dumb as Team Aqua and Magma, if not more. The subcharacters were all uninteresting, with the exception of the characters in the Looker Mission. The dex was great because of the many options, but it also made it feel likes many details were rushed. Areas with apparent complexity were completely ignored like Anistar and the fairy gym town. The obligatory subquests like the run for Furfrou were pure time wasted. The game's difficulty were piss easy (and the fact the game before had the option to choose hard mode made it feel like didn't even try) and the level curve its like Johto, but the opposite (YouTubers had teams 10-12 levels above the enemies) making Exp Share a bitter joke. Also started many of the problems we have been facing with the 3D era that were also seen in Alola and Galar, which makes its good selling kind of problematic.

I often find the suggestion that X and Y were a step down bizarre. X and Y had the best online interface, the biggest region, and the best story of any games in the series. X and Y made several really good balance tweaks to the overall engine (nerfing Drizzle and Drought was an A+ idea), and mega evolution was a pretty great subsystem for a lot of reasons. I have various complaints about the games that came after X and Y, not that they were bad just not as good, but X and Y themselves seem to me to be a clear high point in the franchise.

The games def had way more potential compared to the shitheaps that would be released afterwards (ORAS-Gen 8), there was some great things going for this game that could have made it out to be one of the best pokemon games ever, but it's potential was squandered due to dumbass management over at Game Freak.
