Gen 6 is when shinies truly became easy, with chain fishing, friend safari, and dexnav. Before that, you get a shiny Gible or Dratini for working for it, a shiny Haxorus for 100%ing the dex, natdex, and in Gen 4 you only had Gyarados from HGSS, everything else required actual effort to find shinies beyond that, and at 1/8000+ odds, even the G5 shiny charm wasn't much help. Fact is, 2~5, not 2-3.
