It was an era where video games were just becoming huge, were still being explored and experimented more with, people finally had an outlet for their creativity involving universes, characters, etc. that weren't just books or movies (which were very limited in what you could do with them). It was a an exciting and creative outlet to express yourself. A brand NEW thing to experience.
Now they're just used as cash grabs and almost nothing else and you fucking know it.
