No one expected a Go-specific Pokemon so it was expected that Niantic ruined whatever plan GF had for the reveal of something new for MSG.
Also, remember they DID screw it up. Before Meltan was spawning post-Chikorita CD, people in Japan and Austrailia were seeing hordes of Kecleon instead of the planned Meltan. All were Ditto, so none caught. Kecleon still is not available in Go to this day.
