New pokemon need to be made available throughout all new areas in the game in order to help give incentive to explore, nothing more disappointing then finding a new area and not running into new pokemon in my opinion. Besides I don't think it's too much to ask the player to use more than 6 pokemon through the game, that's why some weaker pokemon from the early game are designed to thrive during the early game and then be replaced later, they had their moment and now the stringer pokemon will get their moment. I usually use 10-12 pokemon per playthrough, replacing older, weaker members for new ones as I go, it's fun.
