I love Platinum and I can tell you I didn't give two shits about the story. It was everything else that made the games.
BW's serious story was fine, but really it wasn't great either.
I think if GameFreak wants to have serious story bits, just throw those around as lore tidbits for people to pick up. Things like the Regi tombs, the Abyssal Ruins, Sea Mauville, that stuff.

I'd prefer if they just went back to Team Rocket style villains at this point, forcing the legendary into the plot has become more contrived now in every game ever since BW to the point where it's being actively detrimental to a possibly better story in Gens VII and VIII. Plus ever since ORAS they seem to have been moving towards "wackier" villains but the joke of these haha goofy villains, look at them stumbling up really only works the first time and it left both the Aether Foundation and Macro Cosmos as pretty uninteresting antagonistic groups because there was fuck all interaction with them.

The games don't need to be melodramatic either, Maxie and Cyrus' grandstanding is pretty fucking dumb and shit like destroying the world with a Legendary Pokemon is a needless ramping of stakes which doesn't really pay-off in any meaningful way.

Making characters that are actually ENTERTAINING is what they did right here. Both Klara and Avery are just fun to interact with, and I feel that's kind of what they need to play up more. Dickhead rival, but in a humourous way is the way to go. I never really felt bored reading their dialogue, as opposed to say, Hop or Rose or whoever, and when they DO get serious it has more of an impact.

So in that regard, yeah, trying to be less serious definitely worked in their favour here.

Lysandre though. That's just complete failure to set up the world in a way such that his views would be understandable. Kalos - the Pokemon world in general, is an effective utopia. His and Rose' 'resource' thing just falls apart instantly.

The plot progression is the exact same. the DPPt climax is even between 7th and 8th gym like in RSE. The champions have the same "mysterious lore finder" role in the story and even have similar hobbies (digging for rocks vs digging for artifacts). Both previous legendaries appear together before they're freed from their spell by the third legendary. The only main differences are that there's one evil team and that dialga and palkia aren't enemies.

RSE/DPPt/BW/XY aren't inherently unserious because their "use the legendary to fuck with the status quo" plots are presented in bland and samey ways. I think that's the real problem people have.

The GC games just feel closer in nature to other JRPGs than the main series, because you're not a kid who takes down some criminal organization on your way to the champion's seat.

Literally nobody ever praised the generic plot line of the GC games, they were great due to neat mechanics and some colorful characters, but the plot itself is boring and basic and the "serious" characters all forgetable.

But even then they're better than BW and XY because atleast nobody in the GC games bored me with cringy pseudo-philosphy rants.
