Trainers can call you to rebattle and tell you when rare Pokemon show up, day and night cycle with different Pokemon at different times, giving small and not overbearing lore for legendaries and keeping them optional, the colors and animated sprites in Crystal, breeding and passing moves, shiny Pokemon, I could keep going.
Personally for me Gen 2 has the weaker monster designs in the series and Waterfall and Whirlpool are only needed in one area each so I hate them. Every gen has its glaring issues but as the first sequels there is so much to love and appreciate. When people discuss gens and only talk about the level curve or difficulty it really annoys me because there is so much more there that its insulting to just ignore.
Plus, after you’ve played like 3 Pokemon games it becomes apparent that difficulty is dictated by the player. Your types for the most part will determine what parts of the game will be challenging.
