But, they had such a strong concept.
The creature designs were fantastic.
And the game was more accessible compared to other JRPG's at the time.
They demand respect.

The cooperative multiplayer aspects were innovative at the time, nearly every multiplayer game back then was either head-to-head or co-op where two people play the same game at the same time.

yes, pokemon is a jrpg out of the norm, which rewards cooperation and competition with a simple story ( almost all rgps are visual novels with grinde, so if you want literature, look for a book from 200 years ago).

Pokemon is the grandfather of MMORPGs on portable consoles, and what made video games a very lucrative sport.

The world-building of Pokemon is down to earth and closer to our reality which is the opposite what Final Fantasy are striving for.

They were just Dragon Quest rip-offs, down to the monster designs.
Even DQ5 did the monster raising thing first.

I agree, for their time they had a really strong foundation as far as concepts go. It's clear shit changed a lot after gen 1, gen 2 is a lot closer to that traditional pokemon world like in the anime while gen 1 clearly still has bits left over from the original concept
