Honestly you’re right, the hair and teeth are the biggest problem, along with the arms looking weird. If they had made the ‘pads’ shorter and less cone shaped it would look less bizarre. Also, I feel like it would’ve made more sense for the first stage in the line to have the boxing pads, no?

I'd say it makes sense for it to have the boxing pads, it grows old and grey and can no longer compete in boxing, so it trains the young Crabrawler instead.

Yeah I get that, but to me it doesn’t make sense because ageing and moving to a mentor role implies getting weaker, which doesn’t line up with evolution in Pokémon as evolution denotes a Pokémon moving to a stronger form

Gen 2 Pokemon in fact couldn't be more of a natural extension of gen 1 if they tried. It feels extremely cohesive, and absolutely none of the Pokemon feel out of place. The types of designs may be different, with Pokemon leaning towards more cute designs to balance how Gen 1 was mostly monstrous, but the overall design principals, philosophies, and art direction is pretty much the same.

One, the "simplistic" Pokemon of the early gens still tend to have more going on with them than later gens (be it fur detailing, decent anatomy, coloring, etc), but also they had thematic reasons to be simple. Here's a classic example; Natu and Xatu. They're made of round and simple shapes and hard lines to echo and call back to native american totems. Note that they're the exception in their gen with these design principals. However, with the artstyle shift and Pokemon like Fletchling being just as simplistic (but for no actual reason), it retroactively harms Natu's design. Where before it was this strikingly weird native american bird, now it's really no different from any other bird, since there's countless bird mons and other Pokemon just as simplistic if not more.

The starters, legendaries and a few outliers like Stantler, Tyranitar, Girafarig, etc. DO NOT compose the majority of gen 2's designs, which are as simplicistic as any gen that follows. Gen 2 is where it began in great numbers, there's no reason to deny it. Simple isn't bad, it just means it's simple. Scizor is a Scyther with a simpler design and a mom turning on the safety feature for her child, but it's not a bad design.

Crabrawler and Crabominable should have been separate. They should've saved their yeti crab concept and not made it related to Crabrawler. The two are so different from each other that it feels like they just stuck them together just because they're both crabs in the Anomura infraorder.

If you weren't legitimately retarded you'd have noticed that it was more about representing the look on the animal on the Pokemon rather than directly comparing the two. Ledian has nothing that makes it resemble a "realistic" bug type as much as Venomoth does to its original creature.

To finish, Aipom is one of the MOST cartoony and simple Pokemon of all time, and certainly the most in gen 2.
