Pretty much every Pokemon benefits from a hold item anyway. There are a handful of consumable items that see use like weakness policy and sitrus berry, but in general it will be a reliable move to hit most Pokemon.

Not him, but I think he means that in vgc there are more weakness policies, berries, and other items that are consumed. Dunno though, I don't play smogon.

It's common to have three or even four of your items be consumables. Matches are short, and a one time heal for 25% will often be better than waiting for five turns of Leftovers recovery at 6.25%. Also thinks like Weakness Policy, or even Throat Spray get more use because switching is less common so the buffs wouldn't be wasted as often.

I guess that makes sense.
But consumable items are still items. Unless they're consumed turn 1, you still leave yourself open to a Poltergeist.
