Did they intentionally cut content and features to sell as DLC to zoomers and whales that can’t control themselves? On top of monthly subs... the state of this franchise/fanbase..

I'm convinced that it actually is.
Ishihara thought that the Switch would fail, so the games were being made for the 3DS, but then when the Switch was a success they tried to Port the game to the Switch, but they didn't have enough time, so it was half assed.

As franchises expand over the years, more and more features and just larger more impressive expectations are made. Until it becomes both a financial and logistical nightmare.

It's a pain in the ass for the consumer, as newer products suddenly have a lot less content than previously. But it does make shit easier for the devs.
And this really is the main problem with Sword and Shield. In many ways they're really improved games, with better quality and modern features. But in many other ways, they feel cheap and empty.

Just sort of got to stick around and hope later games include more.
