The way darkness is shown in gen 1 you can literally see the walls tho, and if you can see the walls then you should be able to get through, it's basically the 1 path with some short dead ends

I hated the sewers for the most part. It had great parts that felt like a classic adventure dungeon but the rest was monotonous and unnecessary. It could have been great.
