Is it a sense of wonder exploring a new area with monsters?

Is it the feeling of learning what changed from the last games to the next?

Is it just about mashing through the story and fighting tough trainers?

Do you take in everything, or leave paths and items untouched?

With the series in the state that it is, it will be good to remember why you used to love it and why its hard to now.

Pokémon was always about immersing myself in a world filled with cool monsters and things to explore and do. The beauty of nature, the gorgeous music and just travelling around, connecting with the Pokémon on your team made it feel like I was in a whole new world, or at least it did when I was a child.

Memories in games are formed, typically, through overcoming a personal struggle. Newer games have so few parts that aren't mandatory, you never feel like you're doing anything special. I'm sure its why they aren't memorable.

I'm not even against characters in Pokemon, but the characters should be used to facilitate your own adventure, not have their own without you. Who the fuck enjoys playing second fiddle to an NPC in their own damn escapism?

Growing up in New York City, there wasn't much diversity in life from rats and pigeons. But I remember borrowing a plastic tank from my school and raising random insects like a jumping spider, swallowtail or cabbage white caterpillars from Central Park in it. Watching them interact with their environment and grow always filled me with a sense of wonder, camaraderie, and to an extent, parenthood.
Pokemon caught that same feeling with more creatures and challenges to grow closer with them. Simply the act of raising your favorite creatures on a eventful journey is Pokemon to me.
The problem with Nu-Pokemon is that the new pokemon feel less like wild creatures that co-exist in an ecosystem and more like fursuits and memes shoved into the game for Twitter to fawn over. Gone are the winding caves and mysterious side locations in exchange for linear shit like Galar Mines or Glittering Cave. Even battling is less about the Pokemon themselves, but rather abusing the generational gimmick.

True for Galar but Alola had one of the most 'natural' feeling dexes of them all. The Pokemon all matched the exotic setting perfectly and the dex entries added a ton of lore to old and new Pokemon like we've never seen (at the cost of only having dex entries for the regional dex, but thats a trade I'm perfectly happy with)

Every dex has ups and downs, but don't try to convince me mons like this, Dhelmise, Lurantis, Turtonator and Drampa look at home in an Alolan ecosystem just because they're found there. They each look like big, clunky toys.

Do people still shit themselves when they see pokemon based on man made objects?

dhelmise isn't actuallythe anchor, it's the moss, hence why it's not steel type but has an ability that gives it steel-type STAB

I really don't get Dhelmise. If it was just moss as a baby and evolved into the anchor, maybe, but as it is, its just too hard to see it and the anchor as separate.

Yes and no?

Most early gen pokemon that look like shit might have been to push toys, but we were around them longer than a year so we got to develop our own ideas of why they were they way they were.

Muk isn't something I would think would sell many toys, but Lapras would.

Lapras looks natural, though, like a real creature who belongs somewhere in the wild. But for years, we were taught that Lapras had a purpose, same with most early pokemon.

Now, we have things like this, and I didn't even know it had a mouth under that fire nozzle nose or that the rocks on its back exploded, but there is no place or time for these things to feel at home in their world. They just walk around waiting to get caught, and I think that was the autistic anon's point. The game used to fold into itself with its flavor.

The world complimented the monsters who complimented the characters who complimented the world.

The more robotic the game feels, the less fun it can be.

Gen 1 had a turtle with fucking man-made cannons growing out of its back. Numerous humanoids with le human profession that /vp/ pretends to hate when new gens do it. Half the Pokemon in Gen 1 look so detached from the rest of the region they had to create the Safari Zone just to cram them in somewhere without it looking dumb.

Not saying every pokemon needs to look natural, but I am saying the games should go out of their way to make them feel like parts of the world and not just random animals with elemental features.

Voltorb run abandoned power plants and Clefairy populate Mt. Moon because of some stupid reason. In its game, Turtonator is found on Blush Mountain and I, the player, have no idea why. Nothing about it says "it can just go where ever" and there even was a volcano area in the game and they didn't put it there. Its almost like they just pulled a design out of a binder full of finished pokemon and slapped it onto an already developed map, simply assuming no one would think its out of place.

Its design being good or bad has nothing to do with how awfully its implementation into its own world was handled.

The problem here is TPC now tries to shove the same Pokémon down our throat everytime they have a chance and neglect the other Pokémon in the game. Many people don't know how most of the newly Pokémon work because they became obscure too soon. This is sad because when these games have a lot of abstract designs they need to be better known to be accepted and loved. For example, many people still don't know Dhelmise isn't the anchor and actually is a large moss who could strangle a Wailord.

But it isn't a recent problem. Some Pokémon had to wait entire generations to show a small part of what they are capable of, like Probopass in Pokémon Generations.

I can agree that some of the newer Pokémon looks a bit off especially when these are furries acting as humans more than animals or living beings that you can easily imagine in the wild, but I don't see this problem in Alola besides Incineroar.

Hopefully the New Snap could show us many of these obscure Pokémon in the wild that we need to know more, it's the perfect game to show us how do them work.

Because Clefairy have an entire dungeon dedicated to them. They don't feel out of place, they feel rare.

Running into a Tutronator in the middle of this electric area is weird.

How is that any different from an electric mouse being found in a forest?
Or Jigglypuff and the Nidos evolving from a Moon Stone despite no discernable link to the Moon
Or Cubone's entire nonsensical lore
Or Alakazam and the Hitmons are literally meme designs based on real human beings and have no place in nature
Or Moltress being randomly dropped in Victory Road despite the other birds being in locations that made sense (although birds being found indoors and in caves is already pretty dumb)

Pokemon as an ecosystem really didn't make any sense until around Gen 3, which is the point where - for better or worse - the Pokemon universe stopped all pretense of just being 'the real world plus Pokemon' and became it's own full Pokemon universe with Pokemon dieties and shit. That was around the point where irl animals like the indian elephant became decanonized, and the Pokemon started to have relationships and dynamics with each other (Seviper and Zangoose being the obvious example)
