Serena and Lily in particular have arcs that have been done infinitely better in a thousand other franchises

She is pretty much a basic shoujo protagonist. There is nothing unique about her. None of Pokemon characters are particularly deep. Doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable, but the character progression is pretty basic.
