They actually don't work the best sometimes. I had a bootleg Emerald cart as a kid and immediately after I caught Rayquaza the game corrupted and I had to delete the save file. They also have shitty batteries so they dry up faster and unlike legit carts, their saves die with the battery.

the only reason i would see to buying a GBA game is for collection purposes
if you have a GBA/DS you get an EZ-Flash Omega
if you have a 3DS you use Virtual Console injects

dude, you have a hacked console and PKHeX exists, just copy the save off the games you want to transfer and import them to the target game and restore the saves

Fake carts are less opaque in the jewel casing, the embossment of “Gameboy advance” is thinner.

People who make fake carts have a lot of trouble recreating the holographic nature of genuine carts, ‘The Pokemon Company’ is NEVER in the correct font, sometimes they beef up the Nintendo font and the ESRB notice is barely legible in fake carts. Also the big ‘E’ is much thinner than it should be a lot of the time.

Never buy carts from chinese seller. You will be burned I gauruntee it.

At this point, just mod your 3ds and inject the gba games.
PKSM supports Gen 3 saves now so you can send them off to the later games.

All the repos I've got of FireRed/LeafGreen have worked beautifully.
Though I hear Emerald is the problem, but I don't know if it is a legit "problem" or people playing up one incident as deterrent from buying repos and "BUY MY $80 DEAD BATTERY CART INSTEAD"

Ebay is the cheapest and best method to buy GBA cartridges. You have to be braindead not to be able to spot fake cartridges. The only reason not to bother with ebay is if you are unable to put in the time required to sift through auctions and find good sellers, good items, and good price. If that is the case just pay twice the average price and get it from a used game store or emulate it.
