XY didn't do poorly either. OLM did a 180 because the games were doing a 180 as well trying to copy Yokai Watch, to which TPC started making note of. In the end both ended up fucking up.

They were about as serious as older games (in other words not that different).
They literally threw you notWhisper in the games as well as Z-moves trying to cash in on the Yokai Watch dancing in the games. The anime did a 180 because that was the whole plan with TPC. Ironically enough kids also ended up not watching SM as well.

The changes were made to make it more appealing to kids because they stopped watching in mid-XY. Pokemon is conservative as hell. If XY was successful then they wouldn’t have changed a thing when it comes to the tone.

In what world is this series more serious then SM? The only remotely serious episodes were the Koharu and Raboot/Go. But other then that it is fairly light-hearted, more so then SM, which had the whole Litten storyline
