I don't wholly hate Rejuvenation's story and characters, there's some parts that interested me, but you're right that each arc focuses on entirely different characters and antagonists, that it's unclear what the hell is going on.
I understand the complaint about the pronoun lecture in Reborn (and beating 2 gym leaders to move a couple rocks), but aside from that I enjoyed the story and characters, only really disliking Cain, Anna, and Zel. Most of the characters felt like characters instead of tropes or setpieces, which I found most of the characters in Rejuvenation to feel like.
Your point about the gym challenge in Rejuvenation is on point, when ever does it make sense for us to fight some random jerkoff for a badge so we can continue hunting down some other jerkoff.
