As someone who only recently watched it while shiny hunting, it semed the amalgamation of all of Ash's adventures leading to that league. He practices with his mon and tries new techniques in battle while utilizing some of his previous gen mon strategically throughout the league battles. Paul is also a decent rival with the Chimchar subplot. then BW anime ruined it by essentially restarting his and Pikachu's experience levels

It was actually good. The characters were fun and competent, the league+contests were well optimized from Hoenn, and pokemon actually evolved, among other things. So competent they had to asspull a legendary trainer just to make Ash's defeat credible. Then next gen came this.

DP was basically the ending to the original anime. It combined everything they learned from OS-AG and put what they thought were the best elements. BW was basically a reboot of the anime, much like the games, which turned Ash into a complete retard, and gradually took a different direction with plot elements and tone.
