3D lifeless Pokémon models standing idle will never have soul

Ugly 3D locations like the majority in Swshie and especially the wild zone will never have soul. Majority soulless = game soulless

Towns with nothing to do and no npc side quests or extra content will never have soul.

Pokémon game after gen 5? Soulless. Anyone who tries to claim gen 6 7 or 8 have soul is a paid influencer or not 18 yet.

Sprites were more lifeless because they didn't move at all.

The only difference is that sprites let you use your imagination to fill in the gaps. You imagined the battles in your head. You can't do that with 3D.

In my opinion, sprites were better. Look at tyranitar. It's supposed to be menacing. However, the 3D model makes Tyranitar completely harmless.

They don't need to be posed because they can make those same poses for attack animations. A fully animated 3D model would look awkward holding the same pose as a static 2D sprite.

It isn't that 3d is inherently bad, it's just gamefreak is bad at 3d

Back in 2d times some of this stuff could be overlooked, I could just imagine what a characters expression was or how the pokemon would move. It's much harder to do that when they are doing it for me in a sloppy way.

It doesn't take much to give soul to the models anon. GF's mistake was not using the time saved by switching to models to easily tweak them like this. Not only that but now they're cutting them just to sell Home STILL without doing it.
But it's not hard, one person did this.

no they weren't

6 had more soul than 8 did, but 7 at least gave a fuck about trying to give soul to things, but ultimately fell short for anything that wasn't a gen 7 'mon or alolan form.
All in all though, just generally soulless for all those gens. Gen 4 was peak soul.

No you retards, the problem is that everything is still presented the same way they were in 2D games. Pokemon never truly went 3D, it just swapped 2D sprites out for 3D models.

The battle screen on the left is an ABSTRACTION. You are supposed to imagine the battle. It's an abstract representation of what the real battle would look like, just like in most JRPGs.

The battle screen on the right is too 3D, too realistic, leaves nothing to the imagination and DOES NOT WORK as an abstraction. The pokemon are REALLY THERE, two feet away from each other, repeating their lame idle animations over and over again. 3D does NOT work as an abstraction. So instead of asking you to imagine the awesome things it represents, it's doing the imagining for you and showing you a really lame, sterile, lifeless "battle".

3D has never been the problem. The problem is that Game Freak doesn't understand that 3D games are completely different from 2D games, You can't just swap sprites out for models and then leave everything else exactly the same.

Dodging attacks=/=not attacking more than once.

It does when you realize that Pokemon is a glorified sport and not actually a fight to the death. Also "sitting there and attacking" is how a lot of European battles were fought.

He is. He's called Red. Red and Blue were even originally called Satoshi and Shigeru (the same as Ash and Gary's Japanese names) before Gen 2 changed their names to Red and Blue, meaning that they are indeed the same characters.

i read all the posts, they mostly refer to the differences in programming that need to be done, and that 3D is harder to program, mind you, when the game is more 3D interactive as in an adventure game or an action game
if you want a generic quality 2D game yes, the assets will be cheap and easy to do, and animating them with tweening or skeletal animation will net you even more saving since you only need a few sprites to use the mentioned methods

Even assuming Gamefreak is putting equal work into 2D sprites and 3D models, you have to remember that 3D still requires tons of work to reach the levels of imagination that 2D can bring. One is reaching its end because that's how it is, the other reaches the same benchmark despite that it can be pushed way more.

Something that wouldn't work for pokemon since every single pokemon would have to have the same skeletal animation despite each model being radically different. Unless of course you think all 900 pokemon can do T-tar's pose and look the same.

Sprites just worked better for turn-based combat. 3D can be good but not with the kind of stuff creatures inc./game freak do nowadays.

There are plenty of 3D turn-based RPGs that look better than any of Game Freak's 2D ones. Being turn-based or not has nothing to do with it. It's an issue with how shitty Pokemon's animations are.
