I admit there are parts of pokemon that are nostalgia based.
But when I say playing gen 2 in '99 was better than playing diamond in '07, I can back it up with non-subjective information.
I don't like a lot of gen 1 designs, like voltorb/electrode, tangela, seaking, victreebel, grimer, muk, jynx.
In fact my favorite pokemon designs are spheal, rookidee, and boltund.
But these are one gen 3 and two gen 8 mon.
Like I said, gen 1 had problems, gen 2 fixed some, gen 3 fixed more, and gen 4 was probably my favorite when I was a kid.
Gen 4 was probably my favorite, and my last game as a kid. Yet I can see that it's flawed if I think about how little it improved.
I was wowed by the graphics, but that's pretty much it. The only other thing is that battling on youtube became popular, so I was into breeding pokemon.
I don't think I could go back and play gen 2 and 3 again.
I recently went to play HG again, and the safari zone was tedious AF. And white 2, trying to catch a castform a few days ago, since I wanted it in a premier ball. the rustling grass took so long to appear.
XY fixed that with horde encounters and sweet scent at least. And ORAS with dexnav.
I haven't played gen 7 yet, or much of gen 8 (still in second town). But gen 6 really is fun. The engine is pretty fast, breeding is pretty easy, you can catch all the pokemon from gen1 to 6. The main problem is the story was hollow, and there's only the battle maison.
I'll probably enjoy gen 7 more than all the previous gens. I wouldn't enjoy gen 1-5 as much as gen 6 if I played them again.
But playing gen 2 when it was the pinnacle of gaming was great. Gen 3 was pretty good. Gen 4 was when pokemon could no longer keep up with other games, and slid down.
Gen 8 is somewhat a return to form in that it is moving towards an open world pokemon golden age now that it's on better hardware
