I wish they'd give you rewards based on your final leaderboard rank, rather than just giving all of master ball rank the same reward (as there is a huge skill difference between top 500 and top 50000). I've gotten within top 300 a few times but never have much motivation to go further since it just gets stressful being ultra competitive all the time. As a balltist I would go hard for top 100 if that got you a bunch of rare balls for example.

Poison touch seems so niche. May as well run Swift Swim for moments you're in rain or Water Absorb to tank a water attack and turn a neutral hit into an immunity. Really, either one of those abilities would be great against rain teams. The most promonent rain sweeper right now is Kingdra, so outspeeding a modest one with Jolly might be achievable, you'll have to do the numbers.

I do not reccomend Wolfe's entire channel anymore, but he just came out with a video showing how he adresses teambuilding as in core building and complimenting to that. I'd recc giving it a watch ontop of Cybertron's teambuilding guide video

Honestly I was expecting much worse criticism, since I'm very bad at team building. I looked up what mons were popular to use and tried to redo the builds of 4/6 of the ones I already had in my party, since I had to find something to replace the 2 legendaries with.

I found a list that online that showed what GMax forms would be allowed come series 5. Urshifu was added to the list, but the Galar starters were noticeably absent. Hopefully it was an incomplete list I saw, otherwise that really sucks.

Jolly Seismatoad outspeeds Modest Kingrda by 1 single point at level 50. So razer close, but Seismatoad would be given first move unless Kingdra has a speed boosting item.

My Obstagoon is a shiny one I caught from a raid. It’s got a decent nature and IVs, so I figured I’d try to make it work. Imo, Defiant seems decent against all the fags who try to use Intimidate / other debuffs. It also syncs nicely with Corviknight’s Mirror Armor.

Defiant doubles attack (+100%) if the opponent lowers a stat. If. Flame orb guts always raises attack 50%. Not to mention being burned puts you right back to square one, whereas guts doesn’t let burn cripple it, or be paralyzed/etc.

Defiant is the better ability but Obstagoon absolutely NEEDS protect to scout for fighting type moves. To be honest Obstagoon has no business running any set that's not Knockoff+Close Combat+Double Edge (or Facade if Guts)+Protect/Obstruct

Defiant and Guts imo both are good. Guts is like a faster weaker Dark Conk. Obstruct FUCKS mach punch hard, dont dismiss that -2 def penalty. I think Indeedee is a huge partner to run Obstagoon with.

Again, that makes sense. But in the context of my team, I’ll sometimes pull Obstagoon back if I sense a Fighting move coming - I’ll switch it out for Coviknight to tank the hit. Patching up its subpar Special Def. feels like it might be a more worthwhile tradeoff than being able to use Obstruct (although I do appreciate the Def. debuff that can happen from it).

With respect to the fact Intimidate will be your #1 boost platform, itll balance +2-1=+1 boost, equal to guts. Guts also lets you switch out eithout losing the boost. I say they both have ups and downs.

I think that makes it pretty interesting, though.
The meta is more fluid because of new things being introduced.
I wish GF had been open about this being their plan from the beginning. I think the dexcut would've been more well-received if they said they'd be reintroducing the old mons over time.

Given my personal experience with single matches, a battle can pretty much be over before it starts if your opponent has the right pokemon with the right build and moves against your party. At least with doubles your pokemon can cover each other's weaknesses, but in singles, it's your individual pokemon up against something they might not be able to beat. One good sweeper is all it really takes to win most matches.

to be honest, people will talk up the new stuff like Psyspam (Expanding Force, the new move introduced in the DLC, is extremely strong), Rillaboom, Porygon2, and Politoed+Kingdra, but we honestly don't know really how good things will be in a month.

Right now, like what usually happens when this kind of thing happens, everyone is spamming the new stuff and the counters to the new stuff. So Rillaboom has top usage, but I expect it to drop a bit. I expect Kingdra to drop a lot. Porygon2 will get more competition from Dusclops, which is still better in a lot of situations. As Psyspam gets less popular, I expect Urshifu and Terrakion to get more play.

Also, the REAL new sauce is PorygonZ. Everyone is figuring out dynamax PZ is fucking busted. So expect to see a lot of high ladder teams built around it in the upcoming weeks.

tl;dr
nobody really knows, don't buy into usage stats too much right now. But the new meta seems to be a lot of fun so far.

Both serve completely different niches.

Kanto Raichu is amazing for Fake Out, decent bulk with investment, Nuzzle, and other good utility moves. Lightningrod is best for supporting stuff like the rank 1 Gyarados+Raichu team. You can run offensive Togekiss and Gyarados and give Raichu some partners to be annoying and cycle Fake Outs with, like Hitmontop or Incineroar.

Alolan Raichu has had the most success so far on duel terrain teams with Indeedee and Pinurchin. It learns both new terrain moves for it's type, so you can use them and spam it hard.

3v3 Singles has felt too much like luck since Gen 6. You can't really account for everything the opponent can do, so matches tend to be decided on turn one depending on who picked what. Dynamax only exacerbates that factor. 4v4 has infinitely more possibilities so it makes for better viewing, you're not going to see a Prankster Riolu using Priority Trick Room by Copycatting Dynamax Dusknori's Max Guard, you're just going to see a setup sweeper set up and sweep.

Okay I think Im shit at team building but is pretty bad. Ive made two trick room teams and came to the realization that a you need two mons with trick room and b all mons need to be sub 40 base speed. My first team did tbis but my second, I did the same as you, only a few able to actually use and let me tell you I went 3:7 and it was an up hill battle just get 3 wins. Also no protect or taunt. Who watched the Bo3 Aaron vs Wolfe? I feel like the fact Aaron actually experimented with the format gave him a huge advantage, Wolfe even saying going in he hadn't played a single match of s5 before that day. It really showed with Wolfe's team comp unprepared for many of the new strats and ideas. Wolfe is a good player but just shot himself in the foot one too many times to Aaron's setup game.

It happened twice in a row where my opponent surrendered before the battle. Some players might be surrendering to any player with an Urshifu.

Third guy still battled and I somehow still won despite screwing up one of my moves. I had Urshifu gigantamaxed, but forgot the Choice Band wasn't active in Gmax form, so I used the non-critical Gmax One Blow instead of the max hailstorm it was weak to.

Also lol, my Urshifu took down a Dragapult.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. Still though, twice in a row for singles. This is my first time battling human opponents. I've put hours into Battle Tower and Restricted Sparring, but human opponents are a new ballgame to me. They tend to make better moves and I have to time gmax right or I'm done for, which is why I usually just do it at the start of the battle to force them to use up theirs as well so I don't get surprised with it later in the match.

I'm running it right now, and the biggest problem I have is speed. I put Tailwind on my team just to help but there's difficulty getting it off. If you put a berry on Krook, it doesn't get much a chance to do damage when you're not procting your own crit. I've come to the conclusion either the enemy has to be undeniably slower than Krook or only punch yourself when you're maxed. I think the most important thing is unlike Coalossal Surf combos, these aren't exactly EZ bake, you have to discern timing when to do it.
I cannot think of anyone else to safely proct Krook's Anger, Frosslass would do too much damage.

Hmm....maybe you could split the team a bit in terms of strategy. Maybe have an alternate opening of Terrakion/Cobalion and Beat Up Whims? That gets you the tail end of a tailwhind but the switchover to krookodile could be hard to pull off.

Alternativly, take Acrobatics on Uishifu and dynamax it instead. Pack protect on croc so it can get some speed boosts safely for rock slides. If you go full bulky croc Urshifu does about 20% damage to it.

What I decided to do was scarf my Urshifu and give him Coaching. He's an off-support Fu in reality that does both Anger Point procting, faux-Riolu coaching, and hits things hard on its own. As you saw how nice I can just punch things when I'm not boosting myself, it also works neatly to just Coachspam a turn or two and let Krook or whoever run wild (works really well with Talonflame too, check this out https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8vgc2020-1142430630

My biggest concern is "if my plan does not succeed, I do not want to be caught with my pants down and lack the ability to do damage still". This is why Urshifu and Krook are both set to 252 attack, though I'm open to diversifying Krook's spread to add some defenses.

I think the anon is the one with krookodile. As for why no Volcarona switch, that's probably choice band Rilaboom which can 100% Krookodile pretty easily with Grassy Glide assuming they don't have heavy defense investment.

Well I've considered it but am pensive because since Wicked Blow would do nearly half my health in one hit unmaxed, and that's a lot of damage for a underspeed Pokemon.
It won't hit through Max Guard, only his Gmax moves will, so if I max Krook he can't be hit by any regular Unseen Fist contact move.

Yeah people on showdown VGC play completely different from people on real ladder, Smogon kind of has an obsession with status and “strategy” and will weaken their teams in pursuit of it.

Talonflame is very viable in singles too thanks to boots. Smogoons simply have zero fantasy when building a team and just play what is at the top of usage tiers.

God Doubles is so rough for me. I have no problems getting Master Ball tier in Singles thanks to Gmax Lapras but Doubles is fucking torture. Every team is either Indeedee Trick Room or Whimsicott Tail Wind. Literally, I have 20 battles so far and every single team has used one of those strategies. EVERY SINGLE ONE. If you don't build a team specifically to counter those, you're fucked. Can somebody give me a foolproof Doubles strategy because this shit is so infuriating.

Hey, I just found a scenario I wanted to punch myself unmaxed. Guy brought Intimidate Hitmontop and I wanted to protect Krook turn 1 from potential priority, and I also figured x.67 my attack was enough of a nerf to hit myself without the Max HP boost. Once I got the boost turn 1, I swapped in Indeedee for Urshifu to protect against Mach Punches and to get rid of Grassy Terrain from the enemy's Rilla at the same time. I def think this team's biggest weakness is raw speed on Krook, but if they're all slow as dirt like heavy TR teams I don't see what stops you here.

Im amazed by how many people will bring protect but not taunt/fake out/imprison. Last time I played "competitive" Pokemon was during gen 4 and it see that a lot. Dont even need Tailwind, just need either Max Ooze with Max Airstream or Max Knuckle with Max Airstream. No one brings Roar/Whirlewind or Intimidate or Perish Song or Destiny Knot. Tho if you do bring those you shit people up a lot.

Trick Room/Imprison is so clean, it's I think the optimal approach for shutting down TR setups if raw force isn't an option. You don't need to be fast and at the same time you don't need to be afraid of anything BUT Taunt, which is impossible for some Pokemon due to abilities.

you're right on switching in, but Krook could run Thunder Fang or Rock Slide to deal with it as long as it doesn't Follow Me. In reality I expect this to catch on a lot more than it already has, which is also why Urshifu has Coaching options if Wicked Blow doesn't look feasible.

iirc you using G Max Quake was a high possibility because majority of moves Krook knows is sub 80. Switched out Hitmontop to Togekiss Rillaboom use Grassy Glide. Switched Rillaboom (I see higher value in Grassy Surge than anyother Pokemon) and in comes the Wash. Staying in wasnt an option without Gmax Guard. Id rather use Dynamax to make you waste your turns. People just want hyper offensive.

yeah, that's a comment I';ll make about the meta. Maybe I should be thankful so many people froth at the mouth to max turn 1, my favorite playstyle is waiting out to max at just the right time. It works pretty well if I can neuter the enemy and wait out their max and whip mine out safely. Honestly once the threat of Maxing is stripped away from the enemy the battle becomes so much easier, easier than predicting protects.

Showdown VGC is just more meme-filled and experimental. When you get to decent ranks, it's the same on both Showdown and battle spot. Most togekiss have Super Luck btw. Go to pikalytics and build to account for threats, sets and spreads used most commonly.

Considering a hard TR core surrounding this idea. Hatt or Copperajah sound like good teamates as far as damage outputters. Maybe Rhyperior since my heavy grass could deter waters and Marowak for other grasses. Who's a good compliment to such a core?

Are we still in a meta where multiple ghosts are safe to run? Since eviolite's taken I can't do Dusclops, but Cofagrigus is pretty damn similar to Clops, saccing a little bulk for some special attack

So for my main team tr I had Hatterene Mimikyu with Room Service or w.e Copperjah, Drampa as stated, Golisopod, and Cursola. Some contenders would by Rhyperior, Gigalith, Avalugg, Reuniclus, Escavalier, Slowbro, Druddigon, Tangrowth, Crawdaunt, Palossand, Exeggutor.
Anything that fits +100 in attacking stat, +90 in defensive stats and sub 55-65 speed and theyre tr viable. Plus the ones mentioned.

Master Ball is most likely not the top N players, unless there are like 5 million people playing ranked in a given season. Getting to Master Ball is really easy. If you just keep a winrate above 50% through about 50 games you will get there. There are at least 30,000 people in Master Ball towards the end of the season.

Also, they should really not show ranking in Master Ball until 1-2 weeks into the season. Getting rank 1 or even top 50 is stupidly fucking easy if you just do placements the day ranked comes out.
