Golden Age of Pokemon was from Diamond and Pearl all the way through Black2 White2. Everything past that point is a steady decline downhill, and everything before that point isn't quite done yet, the mechanics hadn't quite evolved enough

Pokemania was the golden age of Pokemon. Gen 4 and 5 games were great, sure, but the only thing that has even come close to Pokemania kinds of hype was the Go launch in the summer of 2016. Everything else is niche comparatively. And I'm saying this as someone who thinks BW2 is the pinnacle of the series. I don't even know how to describe it well, but Pokemon effectively took over the planet for a full fucking year. A few good games are dwarfed in comparison by that level of mainstream popularity.

Any disappointment beyond what you feel for X and Y in SM is just your brain blocking out how bad X and Y were.
SM isn't GOOD by any means, but it's a landslide improvement over the clusterfuck that was X and Y.

I grew up playing Pokemon blue, played the shit out of it. Overall I probably replayed Emerald the most out of any though. No I wouldn't say "Its the greatest ever and the golden age. Generation 4 and 5 were the highlights in terms of quality, but had not gone off the rails trying too hard.

It had all the advantages and improvements over the years, but wasn't shit(hand holdy, pandering, not innovating at all anymore, lowest common denomonator) like the newer games are.

Gen 1 and 2 they were still working out the bugs, its iconic and maybe the most real in a way but not the best anymore, gen 3 was almost there, gen 4 was when shit was mostly hammered out and it felt just about right.
