Kanto is cool here because it's fleshed-out and feels "open world" in comparison to Johto - there's no real tedious "story climax" getting in your way. There's a lot to actually explore and you can do it in any order you like. If you speed through it, yeah no shit, it's just gonna be a boss rush. But take your time in HGSS and you'll see there's so much character put into just about every town, route, and dungeon in Kanto (sometimes moreso than Johto) that it feels too expansive to just be "post-game" - it really rewards multiple/in-depth play-throughs. HGSS' real post-game is stuff like Battle Frontier, dex completion (Safari Zone, special swarms, legendaries) and the rematches (that are really well done and do a lot of character work for the Gym Leaders).
