In a series like Pokemon that hit instantaneous success and never saw such levels of success again, no nostalgia is possible.
The first three generations defined their consoles (GB, GBC and GBA), and to a lesser extent so did the fourth generation. We never saw that again, and it's probably the reason other Nintendo franchises started doing so well to fill the void Pokemon is leaving.
