Engine-wise gen 6 is the best in the series. None of the other 3D games are as snappy as XY and especially ORAS and this is only made more apparent with how seamless online is because of the PSS.
Unfortunately, XY itself also suffers from an innate lack of substance in its campaign and post-game, but since all of the newer games also suffer from this problem XY manages to sit itself right in the middle plateau of what's acceptable which is pretty sad.

Nah, both are stupidly easy. But there are random trainers in XY that challenging. I haven’t found any remote challenge in SwSh

XY looks like a fucking PS1 game. The quality jump from it to SM was fucking huge.

Mostly just the late game trainers in SWSH like Leon and the IoA characters which are on par with the minimum I would expect. Not even those equivalents in XY are up to par. I never found any randos in either game difficult though.

I always felt Gen 5 was too short in favor of starting Gen 6 but Gen 5 still felt complete when it was all said and done. Gen 6 was cut short for the same reasons but it should have had another game to tie up everything it missed. We will never have that generation completed.

Meanwhile Gen 7 more than overstayed it's welcome when it was over. SM actually feel like it's been way more than 4 years ago.

The ONLY problem XY has in terms of speed are those godawful skates which should have been optional. ORAS proved you can go off the grid and not completely sacrifice any semblance of movement speed.
Gen 6 just feels good to play man. It's basically gen 5 but in 3D

You're absolutely right and I don't see this talked about enough. Sun and Moon, while awful in many ways, have their most fatal flaw in how the game runs. Everything is so shitty, and it isn't a framerate issue either (though, surprise, that's a problem too), it's how everything moves and functions. It's tedious, frustrating, unsatisfying.
I didn't play Sword and Shield and likely never will, but it looks to be the same there.

The fact these games get looked at through rose tinted goggles baffles me, they are the first games made with 0 effort and the trend has only gotten worse.

I really wish XY had a good romhack to enhance the experience a little. Unfortunately the only ones I ever saw were "the first gym has 6 lv 16 pokémon"-type ones, and they all seem to be balanced around exp share.

Not really. No new Pokemon, no new region, no substantial mechanical improvements or additions. XY alone is far better.

XY are extremely mediocre games that manage to be miles better than Gen 7 and 8 by virtue of the fact that Ohmori wasn't the director.
That fuck is a terrible director, his entire MO is to shove characters in the players face and railroad them throughout the region, even in the post game. His games have some of the laziest level and area "design" I have seen in gaming. Fucking Kalos of all regions manages to have more depth to it than Alola and Galar. He's had two gens now to show his worth as a director and each has been utter garbage. At least Masuda knew what he was doing with XY, somewhat.
I'll take mediocre and forgettable over the pure shit we've gotten since.

New areas were added and you go about the journey differently from BW, the only third version to do this

BW's engine was focused on streamlining existing mechanics, XY added little in terms of battling mechanics too other than the gimmick that is megas.

Yeah it's been almost 7 fucking years already. There's no good reason why romhackers haven't figured out how to start building worlds in Gen 6 graphics yet and instead keep circlejerking in the same Gen 3 engine with a Gen 4 coat of paint.

I know how you feel but the best romhacking efforts have only come out to the last ~4-5 years when the disassembly projects started happening. There are people working on gen 4 but it's an arduous process to completely reverse engineer a game. Gen 5 is probably even more complicated, and then there's the 3DS games. Though I will say it's crazy that there's not even a decent difficulty hack, to my knowledge.

There's one that I played a bit, can't remember the name but I think it's a Drayano hack, but I put it down after the first gym when it became obvious that the only other changes were going to be shoving Pokemon in everywhere in places they don't belong, and not adding any new battles, just replacing old ones with rival battles reusing the same freaking trainer models leading up to the battle. That and random text changes. It was plainly obvious that no one has the faintest clue how to do something as simple as taking existing models and copy/pasting in another spot, reusing the same events, in Gen 6 after all this time.
