The general conciseness is that the games dropped in quality after 5th gen (when the game switched to 3D), but they're still good games, just pretty lackluster. Personally I'd say Black 2/White 2 are the most fun to play through.

Play HGSS, B2W2 with Challenge Mode enabled, Platinum, Emerald, or USUM.

Picking USUM might be a hot take for some people, but it's basically Sun/Moon deluxe version, and Sun/Moon are the best 3D games by far. If you have played Sun/Moon recently, it is too similar to those 2 to be worth it (big reason people disliked it), but if you haven't, USUM is kind of like a spiritual successor to B2W2. It's very nontraditional and one of the hardest games in the series. People often say USUM is the hardest game to nuzelock.

I think the general consensus is that heart gold and soul silver is the best, both are basically two games in one, have the cool ability to walk around with your starter or whatever pokemon you want. Since you haven't played in a while it will offer you a good amount of older pokemon you might be familiar with as well as new ones if you feel like trying out something you've never seen before. It's still pixelated though so if you are a 3d graphics nerd it might not suit you.

While the game is severely flawed.. I genuinely haven't had so much fun with a Pokemon game as I've had with Sword in at least a decade. At first it made me feel dirty, but eventually I realized it doesn't matter and if I'm having fun I should just embrace it and continue having said fun.

I'd like to add that you should stay away from sun, moon, ultra sun, and ultra moon. Though I myself love them, sun and moon is quite different from your average pokemon game and going into it first might be strange. USUM is the the remake and has the same problem with the addition of an after story designed to be the climactic summation of the series and has many characters from the older generations who you wont know.

Blaze Black/Volt White
Blaze Black 2/Volt White 2
Storm Silver/Sacred Gold
Renegade Platinum
These are basically the same games, but adjusted for a much wider pokemon availability. Some of shitmons also have types/stats adjusted so they're viable to actually use.

This is an example of a truly great game indeed, but I think it's more enjoyable if you know more about pokemon, OP seems to imply that he has very little pokemon knowlege and I think that would hinder his experience.

Ignore those two underage faggots, since they missed on Pokemania due to the fact that they were still sperms inside their dads’ balls and also for the fact that they started with the downfall of the franchise, either Gen 3, Gen 4 or Gen 5, they hold a grudge against the Gameboy titles out of sheer jealousy.

If you've played pokemon before Gen 5 is a great introduction to the new games. You get most of the modern QoL changes, and with BW and BW2 you can play 2 full games with a connected story easing you back into large numbers of pokemon. BW were intentionally designed to be a new starting point in the series, and do it well. (unless you listen to some of the Sinnoh fans, according to them anything after Gen 4 is probably trash.)

I like all the ones on original gameboy. You can't go wrong with the classic Red, blue, and yellow. Crystal is also a great game. I enjoyed ruby. Pokemon snap is neat. I also recommended downloading pokemon Go. Those are all the pokemon games I have and I enjoyed them all.

You can't go wrong with any game from Gen 1-5.
Except Heart Gold and Soul Silver, just play Gold and Silver like God intended.

I recommend Pokemon Yellow, or Pokemon Black/White and its sequel.
Just finished Sword's main game and post game, but not the DLC yet, it's ....OK, better than the newer games but still lacks something the older games did.
