Pikachu used to genuinely be cute back when it was sassy and more animal-like in demeanor. I think part of why Pikachu got so ugly is they tried to make Pikachu more anthro. Pikachu's anatomy was originally based on that of a squirrel's.

The only thing I don’t understand is if everybody loved Pikachu’s original design so much he became the series mascot, why then change it? Rounder animals are objectively cuter.

I think seasons 1-4 Pikachu is okay but beyond that Pikachu just gets progressively worse, both in design and character.

By the time Pikachu started learning Iron Tail is when he lost all the substance he had. SM really ruined Pikachu. PM is trying to fix what SM fucked up but it's still empty.

I also think Pikachu's voice actress can't do the moe pikachu sounds from the 90's anymore. Pikachu is very "gruff" sounding now.
