Don't know if I'd call Mewtwo a main legendary but it definitely applies to Ho-oh and Lugia.

Gen 5 was too technically. Gen 2 and 5 are my favourites oddly enough.

Now that I think about it so was gen 4 because the legendaries are involved in the story a whole lot too

In fact so is Gen 3... wtf is OP talking about? The legendary Pokemon are huge parts of the story

He's talking about them being optional instead of being the focus of the games main story which only applies to the gen 1 and 2 legendaries. All the rest are forced encounters and in the case of gens 5 and 8 it forces you to catch the box legendaries.

Considering even HGSS has you fight the box legendary as part of the story, unlike the originals, it's unfortunately not something I see GF going back to, even if it's only for one gen.

I don't think you actually fight Solgaleo/Lunala in SM unless you find Lillie in the post game and talk to her. You instead fight Tapu-Koko as part of the story.
