You can appeal to casuals and still make a game with a fair amount of substance and difficulty that's not brain dead. Look at Dragon Quest, the games are quite literally aimed towards all ages and is casual as they come, and yet the games are still very solid JRPGs and they always have something for returning players. It's a matter of game design really, and in recent years Game Freak's approach has become braindead on all fronts.

Gens 1-5 absolutely appealed to casuals while still keeping it interesting enough for more "hardcore" players. The whole casual vs hardcore thing is just bunk. GF simply doesn't want to put any extra effort into their games anymore.
