the fact that toucannon’s standing on the ground confirms that these mons in game appearances will be forever ruined only because of a one-off non-feature, which makes me seethe the most

I don't get why they had to make the flames not permanent, all the other fire starters are able to keep them just fine.
Doesn't help that his design wasn't actually the best to begin with.

What were they thinking?
Sky Battles could've been cool as a concept if they made a meta around them or even if they just had a flying type gym that was solely done with Sky Battles. Let's Go would have been a great time to bring them back as a post-game only thing since you can fly on some Pokemon.

it would've made sky battles more fun and cool looking if Pokemon had unique animations for Sky Battles vs Regular Battles. And hell, you can also have them use those animations for moves like Fly. But that'd require Game Freak to put in effort.

That would've been ideal, but even if they were just a tiny bit more engaging or utilized more I feel like so many Pokemon getting fucked over wouldn't have stung quite as much.
