BW was a step forward from DPPt in terms of art direction. No cut off backsprites, the novelty of a first mainline pokemon game with proper battle animations, the semi-dynamic camera in battle, all of this contributed with visual soul.
Then the transition to 3D came along. No more pixelated distortions, but you've sacrificed the fluidity and expressiveness of animations and the colorfulness of the monsters in a franchise about these same monsters. The models aren't bad, but the lack of color and expressiveness make them undeniably soulless.
BW was truly the artistic peak of pokemon.
>inb4 'muh bad dex'Not talking about the designs, but how they're displayed in battle.
>inb4 'should be hand animated'Yes, hand animated battlesprites would have looked better, but it's not what we've gotten. Unfortunately GF was not willing to put in the effort even for the 'future proof' 3D models, so the cheap soulful rotation-based animation still looks better than what they've come up with for 3D models.
I agree they're not perfect, but if you believe they're either worse than the static sprites that came before, or the stale 3d models that came after, you're wrong.
