on a serious note i always thought the "spikes" were supposed to be webbing holding the cocoon in place against like a tree or i guess whatever surface he's sent out on, and if that's true it makes sense why they didn't render them in 3d - if they showed him being webbed against the ground he would kind of look totally different, and webbed against an invisible wall would also look strange.

then again, according to this picture i just found on bulba from the anime, he just has spikey spikes! so i don't know why they robbed him!
