I’ve done it before with two DSi’s. In order to transfer gen 5 Pokemon to gen 6 (XY, SM and USUM) you’ll obviously need a 3DS, but just one will do, since all you do is download a special app and swap carts.
In terms of bootleg games, they should be ok. Gen 2 had the most issues, followed by early prints of gen 3 games. The newer ones don’t need a battery, so you’re good.
But myself I’d just buy a cheap DS flashcart if I were you. Spend the same amount of money you’d pay for one bootleg, get access to all the games you’d ever want and then use homebrew to transfer Pokemon from gen 4 to 5. Saves you having to sort out a second console.
