Gen 5 was shit when it came out, but now that we've seen how much worse it can get it feels great. Anyone that liked Gen 5 over the gens before it are factually wrong, you didn't like it, it is just false memories.

I am playing some Gen 5 currently and loving it but I despised it when it came out.

Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. I played from gen 2, in order. Sinnoh was fucking boring as shit and I forgot everything that was going on in that game immediately after I finished it. The same cannot be said for gens 2,3, and 5

Sinnoh had a lot of lore and gameplay to explore compared to something like Johto or even Hoenn.

What does that have to do with how good a game is in terms of gameplay?

From what I see, Gen 5 was pretty good, but people didn't like attempts at including previous content in a manner than didn't outright invalidate the new region. Now you get shit for pushing away what could have been the template that everybody is now clamoring for.
