What >>44128966 probably means is that Emerald has the code for allowing a double battle with 2 separate trainers if they both see you at the same time.
Emerald also has a more varied tileset iirc.

clover has that and it's based on firered so it's def possible. although they implement it wonkily, with only one of the trainers talking with both voices.
