However I recall several instances of kids that missed out in the first wave of pokemania for being poorfags being the ones that also missed in getting to use the time capsule and use Pokemon from blue and yellow so I can attest they were first time players, let's call these kids Kenny.
Most Kennys picked cyndaquil than Totodile and then there were two that picked Chikorita, one of the Chikorita pickers is also a "suspected" dog fucker that kept restarting the game for a female one so there's that.
I was among the blue kids as ones that got to experience of playing Pokemon but playing a 1.1 cart so I actually missed on most fun bugs like missingno, hence why my team of Wooper, Bayleef, Fearow, Exeggcute, Slowpoke and Zubat didn't suffer at all from Whitney.
I can't recall clefairy getting anything crazy on Wooper but it did faint to stomp, I sent out slowbro and growled then tried to use confusion but got flinched then fainted, then sent Bayleef to reflect, poison powder as it used milk drink and just kept headbutting till it fainted.
Wooper evolved while fainted, and yes I did have a Fearow before the third gym, failed to catch my first exegccute so I kept headbutting till another one appeared.
Contrary to my experience most Totodile pickers just did what you did, leveled up through clefairy slaughter then killed Miltank, the cyndaquil users were level 30 when they powered through it except one guy that used Exeggcute and burnt it as Quilava fainted.
The Chikorita users were having problems with Morty at that point instead except the "suspected" dog fucker that wanted to get an all female team with Granbull, Miltank, Girafarig, Growlithe, Bayleef and Furret.
TLDR Kennys did have issues here outside of the Bayleef pickers and the few ones that caught Exeggcute or Pinsir, Cyndaquil users either lucked out or pretty much had a Thyplosion.
