Probably because back in the day when Tentacool/Tentacruel were almost ALL you saw in Kanto's ocean routes. Now they're actually kinda hard to find.

It was actually the same through Johto, Hoenn and even Sinnoh. Zubat had the same issue.

Used to avoid it like the plague until I found a shiny tentacool. The colors get so damn cool when it evolves, and then later found out it’s really solid overall, with good bulk complimented by good moves and blazing speed.

I love him, used it all the time as a kid, loved jellyfish as a child. My cousin managed to snag my ho-oh card by trading me this guy's card, that's how much I liked him.(plus I was a dumb kid)

It's very hard to do but you can return to that method of choice. You have to take a long siesta from all pokemon media. Then you can evolve into the best kind of pokemon fan: using what you like but making it the best it can be.
