Pokémon shouldn't even try to have a deep or prominent story. It was better in the first two gens where only minimal focus was put on it.

Gen 1 was fine, but Gen 2 was fucking shit because it was just Gen 1 but worse in every single way. Every character is either horribly unlikable or extremely unmemorable and the excuse plots handed to you make even less sense than they did in the first games.

Yeah I appreciate less story, more things to do that I'd want to do/be rewarded for. The only elements of a story I care about are the ones I can piece together myself by exploration, not being forced through cutscenes of exposition. I liked reading Mew's origins in Cinnabar Lab.

100% correct. The story in Pokemon is the one that you create yourself by going on an adventure in a bunch of exciting places. Exploring the depths of the Whirl Islands to find a mythical creature is a thousand times more exciting than whatever half-baked, Saturday morning cartoon tier plot GameFreak is going to cook up next.

I will say, though, that this sort of thing didn't completely go away until Gen 5. The Regi quest in Gen 3 is probably my favorite side quest in the franchise, for instance, and I really wish the series had leaned more heavily into that sort of thing instead of going in the opposite direction.

Same. I also liked how extensive it was, and how far off the beaten path you needed to go to unlock the Regis in the first place. I really wish we had more side quests that required you to explore more of the world outside the typical "eight gyms + E4" quest.

In the case of Sun and Moon there is pretty much nothing else to the game. Cutscenes ARE the game, so why shouldn't I hate it when they suck? It's not like I'm enduring them to get to the "good part" because there is no such part.

Let the players visit any route they want from the wild area and have story events take place in locations around the gym town. Sword and Shield totally could have done this with all of Bede's character arc happening on the left side of the region while Marnie's is on the right side and none of it really needs to take place in any specific order considering the wild area easily could have connected the world instead of two towns.
the first two gens flourished because they put exploration first rather than forcing you to play out someone else's story in exactly whatever order GameFreak wants. If everything was connected yet disconnected like Breath of the Wild did with Zelda's story Pokemon would actually feel fun and engaging to play again and zoomers that apparently can't go more than two seconds without switching to a smartphone game would actually have a reason to pick the game up again after dropping it.

I grew up with these games and I distinctly remember gen 2 being absolutely dreadful compared to Kanto; which didn't really age well itself but is still better than this. Gen 2 are not "the most beloved games in the series"; they're just the biggest pieces of nostalgia bait from boomers who refuse to admit it's heavily flawed except they expect to get away with it because it's not Kanto. Johtofags are even more obnoxious than Kantofags. Face it, GSC are bad games and will never be the favorites of the public.

HG/SS are ok though, but mostly because they fixed most of the shit route issues and added more johtomons to earlier parts of the game so you can actually USE them. Also following pokemon.

I'm not asking them not to get confused. Because it isn't the point. When I say they have "no plot" I obviously mean that the narrative is so inconsequential that it doesn't get in way of playing the game. That the devs were smart enough to not even focus on fleshing it out because that's not what the strength or draw of Pokémon is supposed to be.
It's the same thing as Mario. The story of Mario games is always that Mario has to save Peach from Bowser, but people still say the games have no plot. Because it's not meant literally.

I sincerely don't think that you honestly believe the reason why Gen 2 has such a forgettable story was intentional when the fact that every following game has poor writing and story would imply they've always just been terrible at it. Low quality aspects of a game should also absolutely not be dismissed on the idea they could be intentional, just what?

You're conflating a simple story with just plain bad writing. Etrian Odyssey is the example you're looking for, not Mario (which hilariously ironically has better writing than Pokemon when that's a focus of the game), which has a simple but effective plot - Gen 2's plot is just straight ass. I will always hold HGSS as my favorite games, but I'm never defending their plotlines

What I believe is that Gen 1 and 2 stories are just excuse plots, and I appreciate that. It gives me more space to craft my own story. Future games have bad writing, too, but they take themselves seriously at the same time. I don't think you were ever meant to pay attention to Gen 2's "story", just to focus on traveling the region to catch and raise Pokémon.

That doesn't logically follow. Why does 'the plots take themselves more seriously' come from 'I want to craft my own story'?
Regardless, Gen 1 and 2's stories are bad, dude. You can try to justify it, make excuses for it, or say you personally prefer the lack of quality, but none of those are actual arguments against the actual lack of quality.

In fact route 10 is further from route 1 than route 45. And lake of rage is almost as close to pallet as route 10.
Obviously johto is going to have a lot of gen 1 pokemon, and if you look at unused gen 1 pokemon, a lot of them are in gen 2.

You may as well sperg out about b2w2 being a clone of BW with a different story and a little bit more map added

Your focus in the main quest should be just of becoming the champion, and after that, progress enough to unlock all the sidequests once you have all HMs to access the entire map.
