It could boil down to trying to maintain a certain self-image, but I don't think that's necessarily it.
When someone else shows their powerlevel a bit, it's probably relatively safe to show a bit of your own. Tho it's possible OP's been burnt by those experiments in the past and now he's taking no more chances.

But alternatively:
- It's not uncommon for fans of a medium to find other fans cringe. So maybe OP genuinely didn't see an opportunity to make friends here, just red flags and visions of being stuck with a clingy Chris-chan Jr. in the future.
- OP might hate (the Pokemon fan part of) himself and genuinely wouldn't want to be around other Pokemon fans like himself. He really, really wants to be more normal, but there's no magic button that lets him do that, so the next best thing may be giving "fake it till you make it" a shot and trying to surround himself with the right people.
