They're not only able to identify and understand a complex language but can apply it to different situations. They're able to process thoughts regarding human situations, N straight up talks to them and gets information about the player from them.
You can say that there's exceptions, both vastly more and vastly less intelligent than the average Pokemon, but to pretend that they are on the level of real life animals is silly.
