It's just in Gen 6 they decided to gimmick the fuck out of it with Megas (and Sylveon), and in Gen 8 they decided to gimmick it again by making them regional.
Both of which do absolutely nothing for the original Pokemon (especially considering they're both being cut as soon as GF is bored of them)
The real issue is Gamefreak's obsession with making every game have something 'unique' instead of sticking to things that work.
